West Salem June Dairy Days |
About Us
The first
June Dairy Days ever held was on June 20 and 21, 1970. It was
a two day event with various events. We do not know in which order they
were held but we do know that Allen Rouge was Parade Marshall that
year. Some of the first events ever held were a tractor pull, a June Dairy
Days Queen pageant, an old time barn dance, a chicken Q, a refreshment stand,
farm tours, dairy judging, a softball tournament and a milking contest.
The present June Dairy Days event is a 3 day community festival. It is held in the main Village of West Salem park the first weekend in June, any day of the event must be in the month of June. The festival starts at 6:30 AM with a kickoff breakfast. At the breakfast the button design winner is announced as well as the parade marshall for the weekend is revealed. A speaker who promotes the dairy industry is also on hand. In the mid afternoon, a recipe contest is held. The recipe must feature the use of dairy products in it. At 5:00 PM the festival starts with carnival rides, a food stand, and ice cream treats. Entertainment carries on throughout the evening and there is a fireworks show at 10:00 PM. Saturday features a fun run/walk at 7:00 AM and a 2 hour parade at noon. Sunday morning brings the 32 or 64 mile June Dairy Days Classique bicycle tour. Featured food on Saturday and Sunday is a chicken Q, brats, pork sandwiches and other treats from the dairy tent.
